My Journey to Meaningful Hosting (and How You Can Start Yours)

Stepping into your “hosting era”

A cozy dining table set for a small gathering with plates, table runner, and fresh flowers.

Hi there, and welcome! I’m Kelsea, the mind behind Hostess by Design. If you’re here, it probably means you’re someone who loves the idea of bringing people together—but maybe you’ve felt too busy, too unsure, or just too overwhelmed to even start. Trust me, I get it.

For years, I was so focused on building my career as a teacher that life started feeling like one big routine. I was working hard, trying to climb the ladder toward an admin role, but every week I found myself counting down to the weekend, hoping I’d feel recharged enough to do it all over again. I wanted more out of life, but I wasn’t sure where to start.

Then I discovered hosting. Or maybe I should say, rediscovered it. I grew up in a family that loved hosting—we were known for our annual Christmas party, where the house was always filled with laughter, great food, and the kind of warmth that made everyone want to stay just a little longer. That feeling of connection and celebration always stuck with me, even when I was too busy to realize how much I missed it.

Let me tell you, my first attempt wasn’t what you’d call a success. I planned a cozy fall girls’ night—candles everywhere, cute snacks, the whole vibe. And then, when the day came, one by one my friends started to cancel. Only one person showed up! I’ll admit, I was a little crushed. I’d spent hours making everything just right, and I felt like I’d wasted all that time, money, and effort. But then something unexpected happened: the one friend who came and I ended up having such a great time, I almost forgot about the empty seats.

The next time I tried—a Christmas-themed girls’ night—everyone showed up. That’s when it clicked for me: what matters most isn’t how many people come, or how perfect everything looks. It’s the thought you put into creating moments that bring people together, and how it makes you feel.

Over time, hosting became my creative outlet and a way to break free from that routine I’d been stuck in. It gave me an excuse to decorate, plan, and connect with the people I care about. I realized that hosting wasn’t just about entertaining others; it was also a way to rediscover what brought me joy.

That’s why I created this blog—to share ideas that help you get back to the things that bring enjoyment to your life, whether that’s creating a cozy atmosphere for loved ones, taking the time to make your home feel special, or even going all out for just yourself (a “girl dinner” with candles and your favorite playlist totally counts!). I want to encourage you to plan that elaborate dinner, add a little extra effort to a weeknight meal, or celebrate something special in your own unique way. I’m here to help you step into your own version of thoughtful, intentional hosting.
